The southern side of the Upper Valais has no famous peak names to offer but this wild and impressive area is perfect for alpine hikers. Starting at the Simplon pass, the tour crosses several alpine passes between Switzerland and Italy and ends in the romantic Binntal valley. On the Italian side you will discover the wonderful Nature Park Alpe Veglia - Alpe Devero. Rugged mountains alternate with charming valleys and see landscapes. The pass climbs are challenging but the hiker is rewarded by the fantastic views at the top. |

16.09.2010: Simplon Pass 2009 m – Mäderlücke 2887 m – Bortelhütte 2075 mYou meet the tour lead in the morning at the Simplon Hospice (accommodation possible the day before). Ascent through the Chaltwassertälli to the Chaltwasserpass, at the foot of the imposing Monte Leone. From the Mäderhorn summit (2852 m) scenic view on the high summits of Valais and the Bernese Alps.
Uphill 1050 m, downhill 980 m, hiking time 6 h
17.09.2010: Bortelhütte 2075 m – Furggubäumlücke 2686 m – Alpe Veglia 1760 m (Italy)
We ascent an impressive pass. The last climb to the pass is facilitated by iron steps. Descent to the charming Alpe Veglia on the Italian side.

18.09.2010: Alpe Veglia 1760 m – Passo di Valtendra 2431 m – Crampiolo 1767 m
Today you will discover the wonderful Nature Park Alp Veglia - Alpe Devero with its moor landscapes and larch forests. From the pass it is possible to climb the Cima di Valtendra (2693 m). In Crampiolo you will savour traditional italian dishes.
Uphill 600 m, downhill 520 m, hiking time 5 ½ h (without summit)
19.09.2010: Crampiolo 1767 m – Geisspfad 2469 m – Binn 1400 m
A last, alpine trip in a fantastic landscape. Before reaching the pass you must climb a ladder embedded in the rocks. The descent to Binn is one of the most splendid tours in the new Nature Park Binntal.

In case of bad weather the tour lead will choose wherever possible a lighter trail.
